Artist Bio

For as long as I can remember, art has been an integral part of my being. The act of creating something beautiful with nothing more than an idea and some materials has always been exciting to me. Working with clay seemed to me to be the best way to solve the problem of what and how to create such objects. Its ability to be shaped and manipulated into almost any configuration drew me to its plastic nature. The forms I make today are mostly functional and made for daily use. I take great pride in making simple, yet beautiful utilitarian ware. My sculptures are of a different nature. I try to create tension between organic and geometric arrangements. Combining opposites is great way to create visual interest and stimulate the mind. I took my first clay class in 1969 while pursuing my Bachelor of Art Education degree at the University of Oshkosh. It changed my life and the direction my art would take. Upon graduation I accepted a teaching position at Waukesha South High School as a ceramics and art history instructor. I lasted four years before I decided to pursue pottery full time. For the next 20 years I was a studio potter. During that time I juried into many local, regional and national shows and exhibits. I have won numerous awards and have been a guest artist and workshop leader in many southern Wisconsin school districts and universities. Currently I am teaching ceramics, sculpture and art history at River Valley High School in Spring Green, Wisconsin. I currently reside in Muscoda, WI.
