My interest in art dates back to my childhood. As a teenager I took lessons outside of school with a local New Jersey artist. There are photos of me, age 14, studiously drawing portraits of anyone who would volunteer to sit for me at a local art fair.
During my undergraduate studies I took drawing, painting and art history from Charles Peterson, a well-known artist with a studio and gallery in Ephraim Wisconsin. After earning my master’s degree in recreation therapy at UW-Madison I worked with emotionally disturbed children and adolescents for several years using art, drama and physical activities to evaluate their social functioning. The following twenty years I worked on the Madison campus in student affairs and academic advising. While working full time and parenting three children, I went to law school part-time and was able to complete that degree in 1991. In my spare time, I took an occasional drawing or painting class and worked predominantly in pen and ink, graphite and oils. From 1991 until my retirement in 2004 I helped support the family and my art “habit” by working as an assistant city attorney in Madison practicing municipal law.
Since retirement I have been able to take a variety of art courses in color theory, composition, life drawing, and painting while working primarily in watercolor. I am a member of the Madison Art Guild (MAG) and in 2007 won first prize in watercolor in the annual MAG salon show. I’m also a member of the Wisconsin Regional Artists Association and have won state awards for the last three years. My work can be seen at the Original Pancake House on University Avenue in Madison and in the Red Door Gallery. I am most proud of being a contributing member of the Richland Area Arts Council and act as membership chair and treasurer for the organization.
What makes it all possible is the expansion of time for art these last five years and my incredibly supportive husband Topf Wells.
