Mark Cullen Mark Michael Cullen received his Bachelor of Arts in 1989, and his Master of Arts in 2004 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has participated in numerous solo and collaborative art exhibitions in the United States and Japan. His works are collected by the Parson's School of Design in New York City, The Elvehjem Museum of Art in Madison, Wisconsin; as well as many private collections in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Mark has contributed illustrative material for the Progressive Magazine, and is sole proprietor of the artist's book press: The Dark Elf Press. He has enjoyed collaborative artwork since 1996, when he was invited to participate in a collaborative group show with Graduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The experience opened his eyes to the essentially social nature of all art forms, and the importance of relinquishing control in the creative process. In this way, the visual arts can approximate the communal fellowship found in other mediums, such as: music, drama, or dance. Through collaboration, visual artists are able to generate new ideas that a single visual artist would not have arrived at independently. Mark creates artwork that is reliant on line, owing to his interests in children's art, graphic design and illustration, cartoons and Japanese artwork. His mediums include drawing, painting, and printmaking, which utilize traditional materials, and non-traditional materials. Some of the more unusual materials he has employed include, but are not limited to, recycled teabags, and vinyl sign lettering. Although Mark has lived in San Francisco, Kanazawa (Japan), and Madrid, he considers the Midwest to be his home. He currently lives in Middleton, Wisconsin with his five-year-old son, Jack. The house they live in features a kitchen large enough to ride a tricycle.
