Biography of:

Doris Hall

My name is Doris Hall. I have always been interested in art. After graduation from Junior College, I signed up for a drawing class at the Chicago Art Institute, but got married to William Hall instead.  We moved to Heidelberg, Germany. I thought that here was my chance to learn to draw, so I went to the University and signed up for a class. I was given an address which turned out to be a third floor garret. I knocked on the door which was opened by a man with glasses; the thickest I had ever seen! He pointed to a bench in front of an easel and said “Sit.” He sat next to me - our noses touching and he said, “Draw!”  I left in a hurry, never to return.

A few years later, we moved to Athens, Greece, where my husband was attached to the American Embassy for 3 years. I had some painting lessons from a Russian woman. She served afternoon tea to us, cocktails to her later class and then wondered why they were more imaginative than we!!

We moved to Arlington, Va. where I had a teacher who insisted we paint outdoors and attack our canvases with palette knives.

Then after we moved to New Jersey I took our 9 year old daughter to an Old Mill Gallery where an old gentleman taught her painting and allowed me to play with clay.

Next we moved to Florida where my husband did some cable contracting for the moon shot and I again joined a painting class. My teacher set up still lifes (mostly flowers) for us to paint.

Our last move was to Richland Center. Here I took an Art History class and some drawing classes at UW-R.

My husband and I have been fortunate enough to be able to travel in Europe several summers where we visited many beautiful works of art. My most favorite gallery is the Musee d’Orsay in Paris. I shall always remember the amazing Bayeux Tapestry in Bayeux, France and the prehistoric cave paintings at les Eyzies.
